Here at Apollonia Dentistry Liverpool, we have a wide and varied array of treatments! Today we’ll give our readers a little Q&A on fissure sealants
What are fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are coatings that are applied to the surfaces of permanent teeth by the clinician. They are provided for teeth to prevent tooth decay (dental caries) and so reduce and hopefully avoid the need for conventional fillings later in life.
What are pits and fissures?
These are the small cracks and crevices that naturally occur on the surfaces of some teeth especially the back ones. These may extend deep down into the tooth and cannot be reached by the filaments (bristles) of a toothbrush. Food and bacteria can become lodged here and over time cause decay.
How do sealants help prevent tooth decay?
They form a protective layer over the tooth surface, sealing it so that food cannot collect in the grooves. This means that less plaque forms so less decay occurs. Some sealants also release fluoride, which provides extra strength to the tooth enamel.
Will the procedure hurt?
No! First the tooth is scanned with a specialised laser called a Diagnodent which finds even the smallest amount of early decay with 100% accuracy. Readings from 10-20 suggests a soft or decalcified area needing minimal treatment. Readings over 20 indicates decay which should be removed. If the tooth is free of decay it can simply be cleaned, conditioned and the special resin applied (fissure sealant). It is then set hard with a curing light. If decay is diagnosed soon enough it can then be removed very comfortably, keeping the cavity as small as possible and almost always without the need for an injection. The flow-able protective resin can then be provided in the same way as before (composite sealant).
How long will it take?
It will take just a few minutes per tooth. Teeth can be sealed one at a time or several at once.
How long do the fissure sealants last?
Most fissure sealants last several years but it varies between individuals. If they should fall off or wear down they can be easily replaced as long as there is no decay underneath them.
If I have my teeth fissure sealed do I still need to brush them?
Yes! A fissure sealant does not protect smooth surfaces or spaces between the teeth, so normal oral hygiene rules still apply:
• Remember to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
• Avoid sugary food and drinks where possible
• Visit your dentist and hygienist for regular check-ups.
• Chew sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after meals and snacks.
Please note- children’s teeth are sealed with a glass ionomer material rather than a composite material. These allow the tooth enamel to mature and harden, but do not last as long and may need to be replaced more often. When the child reaches adulthood, they can be replaced with long lasting composite.
Fees per tooth
• Fissure sealant £35.00
• Composite sealant £45.00
